Key Terms to Know

Posted on May 20th, 2019 by Tom Zimmerman

As lawyers, it is our job to protect you and make sure you receive the justice you deserve. Sometimes there are legal terms we use that you may not be familiar with. Here are a few terms to understand when meeting with our Chicago consumer rights lawyers at Zimmerman Law Offices, P.C.

Consumer Fraud

Consumer fraud is a deceptive business practice. This practice causes consumers to suffer financial or other loses. Did you know that fraud against consumers is often related to false promises or even inaccurate claims made to consumers? An example of consumer fraud is the use of fake charities. These “charities” steal your money the same way a legitimate charity would benefit from your funds. Always make sure you know where your money is going when you donate to a charity.

Medical Malpractice

Malpractice is when an activity or treatment is improper, illegal, or completed by a negligent professional. When a hospital, doctor, or other health care professional causes an injury to a patient through a negligent act or omission, this is considered medical malpractice. There are several instances of medical malpractice. To name a few: failure to diagnose or give a misdiagnosis, unnecessary surgery, and failure to order proper testing.

Wrongful Death

As terrifying as this is, wrongful death happens often. Wrongful death claims are brought against a defendant who has caused someone’s death, negligently or through intentional harm. If a victim who had a personal injury claim is then injured from negligence or an intentional harmful act, a wrongful death claim can be applied.
