You may feel as though you have the experience and qualifications in your profession, but in order to practice in your state, you may be required to obtain a professional license. Careers in the medical and pharmacy field, social work, psychology, nursing, beauty and more require an individual to complete specific coursework and prerequisites, as well as completing the application process in order to obtain a license.
Once you are finished with prerequisites – schooling, internships, residencies, etc. – you can apply for your professional license. Keep in mind that different states may have different requirements, so if you are moving to a different state, you might have to take additional classes or take qualification tests again.
When the required work is done and you have passed all exams, you can apply for your license. If applying in Illinois, this must be done with the Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation, or IDFPR. You can find the application for your field online (make sure you find the right one), where you will have to print the pages, fill them out, and mail back to the office. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully so you won’t have to start over. You will likely be required to send additional items with the application, such as certificates, transcripts and more.
Upon receiving all necessary information, the IDFPR committee will process and review it. The licensing and testing division may administer appropriate tests. If you meet all requirements when all is said and done, the IDFPR will issue you your license.
The application process can be complex and at times overwhelming. It is recommended that you retain the services of an attorney who understands the ins and outs of the IDFPR.
