What To Do If You’re in a Car Accident

Being in a car accident can be a traumatic experience, no matter how severe the wreck. You may be disoriented and confused. However, it is important to take certain steps if and when you are in a car accident. Below is the list of things to do if you’re in a car accident.

Before the accident

Make sure to prepare before an accident even occurs—it will pay to be ready should the day come. Have a copy of your insurance information handy. Also, have a pen and paper in your car, along with something to take pictures (this could just be your mobile phone). Always have your license and registration. In your trunk, keep a first aid kit for emergencies.

When the accident happens

If and when an accident does occur, get to safety immediately. Accidents range in severity, so this is going to mean something different for everyone. If possible, get your car off the road and out of the way of other traffic. If you can’t move your car, at least get yourself out of harm’s way. Don’t just sit in the car if you are in a direct line of traffic. Check on all parties to make sure they are alright.

Call 911

In minor accidents, the police may not file an accident report. However, you should call the police. Even small accidents can benefit from a police report—especially when dealing with insurance companies. Also, the police will help control the scene. If the accident is severe and people are injured, tell the operator calmly what is going on. If you personally do not have access to your phone, have someone else call immediately.

Document everything

The sooner you document everything, the better. Get it all down while it’s fresh in your mind. Write down details, such as driver and passenger names, insurance information, license plate numbers, makes and models of cars, witness contact information, location, and any details you can remember about the accident. Also, take pictures of everything as best you can. There are even apps you can download to help file a claim that will document a car accident.

File your claim

Make sure to file your insurance claim as soon as you can. You will be happy you did and so will your insurance company, especially if the accident isn’t your fault. This will be extremely beneficial later on in the process.
